The legacy of Sgt. Jeffry Kowalski lives on as his daughter, Madison, recently held the Sgt. Jeffry Kowalski BackStoppers Benefit Dinner. The elegant evening was held at Sunset Country Club, and the all who gathered were there to honor and remember Sgt. Kowalski in support of our mission.
On October 1, 2008, Sgt. Jeffry Kowalski died as a result of injuries sustained in the line of duty 21 years prior. Sgt. Kowalski was shot in 1987 while taking a suspect into custody. As a result of the gunshot wound, he retired in 1999 and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in early 2008, which he battled until his death late that year.
Sgt. Kowalski served with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department for 21 years. He left behind his wife and two daughters.
Here is a short clip of an interview of Sgt. Kowalski reflecting on his career in law enforcement, the moments before and after he was shot in the line of duty and what made him continue on in service despite his circumstances.

We will never forget the life, legacy and sacrifice of Sgt. Kowalski. We are honored to serve his family and are grateful for Madison and her dedication to our mission.
