One night. One mission. One legendary impact. What an unbelievable record-breaking year for the 32nd year of Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses. This morning, BackStoppers was presented the largest donation in Guns ‘N Hoses history with a grand total of $800,000!
Guns ‘N Hoses and the St. Louis community have once again exceeded all expectations. By coming together to make the 2018 Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses an enormous success, you have ensured that the families of fallen and catastrophically injured first responders will be well taken care of for years to come. On behalf of the BackStoppers Board of Directors and the families we serve, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.I am honored to stand before you during BackStoppers’ 60th anniversary year and witness the strong partnership we’ve grown with Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses since it began 32 years ago. I can think of no better way to commemorate BackStoppers’ 60 years of helping – eliminating the families’ debt, providing health care coverage, assisting with the costs of education, and more since 1959 – than to receive this unmatched support for the families we assist. This support would not be possible without David Stokes, Steve Holley, Jack Martorelli, the Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses committee, first responder participants, coaches, staff, the many volunteers, and generous sponsors. Each and every one of you makes a difference in the lives of the families we assist. Since its inception, Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses has been a driving force behind our mission. You have engaged the greater St. Louis region, brought awareness to our cause, and enabled us to provide immediate and ongoing support to the now 80 families with 65 children we assist. There are no words to express just how grateful we are for this support of our mission and of all police, fire, and EMS personnel in our region. I am honored to accept this record-breaking donation on behalf of the 3,000 area BackStoppers members, the Board of Directors, and the over 160 families we have assisted in our 60-year history. Together, BackStoppers and Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses dedicate a combined 90 plus years to assisting families of fallen and catastrophically injured first responders. Together, we will continue this mission for many years to come. Thank you!
-Chief Ron Battelle, BackStoppers Executive Director

For 32 years, Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses has captivated both the first responder and boxing communities, bringing the two groups together in epic bouts. Just like the Gateway Arch, St. Louis proudly claims Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses as its own monumental tradition, an awe-inspiring mainstay. It is the event to attend on Thanksgiving Eve.
Before this year’s blow-by-blows, the ceremonial Ten-Count was conducted to honor Auxiliary Officer Ricardo Davis of the Washington Park Police Department who died in the line of duty on October 27, 2018. Officer Matt Crosby, Officer Gary Glasby and Officer Ryan O’Connor, who were catastrophically injured in the line of duty, were in attendance and honored for their service.
A sold-out crowd of over 18,000 people attended the highly anticipated event to cheer on their choice of Team Red or Team Blue. We cheered on one of our own, Officer David Weinhold, son of Sgt. Richard Weinhold, EOW 10/31/00. Officer Weinhold threw his hat in the ring and represented the St. Louis County Police Department on Team Blue. During his three years of service with the department, Officer Weinhold considered one day entering the ring.
The Weinhold family has loyally made Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses a tradition. Officer Weinhold shares, “I have attended Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses for the past 18 years with my family. We have not missed one since the death of my father. It was always something growing up that I enjoyed, and part of me certainly thought about competing one day”. With encouragement and support from Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses veteran, Sgt. McCann, Officer Weinhold began the tedious training process in August. “My initial goal was not to fight. I wanted to go out and train with everyone and fill in if someone needed a sparring partner. I have the utmost respect for everyone that took personal time to go to the gym and train for hours every day”.
Over time, Officer Weinhold showed signs of progress and strength, which landed him an envied spot on the fight card. “As training continued, I gained more confidence and decided to try and get on the fight card. My trainer, Officer Tim Burke, helped me every day. I was excited and nervous when I heard that I had been chosen to fight”.
We are very proud of Officer Weinhold’ s accomplishments and consider it an honor to watch him succeed. Officer Weinhold is sure to let people know that when they attend Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses, they are supporting a mission that he holds dear. Prior to the fight he said, “I hope that I can go out there as a face of BackStoppers. I want people to see what their support can do, and how they can impact a life”.
The 32nd annual Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses concluded with Team Blue claiming victory. Over $7 million dollars have been given to our cause through Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses. As we reflect on the last 32 years of legendary support, we are deeply grateful for those that dedicate and sacrifice their time to make this event possible. We thank the fighters that train endlessly and the dedicated, record-breaking crowds that make Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses a tradition year after year. Because of the support from the community, we can provide hope to families of fallen heroes. Thank you for contributing to our mission. We will see you on Thanksgiving Eve 2019!Read More
Guns ‘N Hoses has once again broken a record in their 31-year history, raising $700,000 for BackStoppers! Since 1987, Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses has contributed $6.8 million to the BackStoppers mission. These staggering numbers are not possible without the help and dedication of those that work all year round to make this event such a success. The Guns ‘N Hoses committee who organizes the event every year, the first responders that take the time and dedication to train and compete, the sponsors that give so generously to support the work of our mission, and the volunteers that give hours of hard work are all part of what makes this Thanksgiving Eve tradition so special.
These funds will provide assistance to the approximately 80 families with 65 dependent children we currently assist. The love and support from the community shows through this incredible commitment to our mission of helping families of first responders when tragedy strikes.
Our most sincere thanks to every single person who made this possible. Guns ‘N Hoses, we’re excited for what the 32nd Annual Event has in store. Thank you for 30th years of legendary support!Read More
Guns ‘N Hoses has made the largest donation in its 30-year history, raising $653,000 for The BackStoppers! In all, Guns ‘N Hoses has raised a total $6.1 million since 1987. We recognize this incredible support is because of a very dedicated team who put in a lot of hard work and give much of their time each fall. We are very thankful for everyone on the Guns ‘N Hoses committee, every first responder who trains the long hours needed to participate in the fights, and all the sponsors of the event. We’re so grateful for the crowd at Scottrade Center on Thanksgiving Eve year after year, and, especially, this past year for the 30th Anniversary.
These funds will provide assistance to the 81 families with 66 children we currently assist. This donation will go a long way in helping us to care for the families of the fallen, helping to alleviate the burden of losing a loved one serving our community. We provide roughly $1.5 million in assistance each year; eliminating debt, covering health care costs, assisting with tuition from day care through university, and more. Our assistance is possible because of the great support of our caring community, and this year’s Guns ‘N Hoses donation is a fantastic example of this commitment to our mission.
Our most sincere thanks to every single person who made this possible. Guns ‘N Hoses, we’re excited for what the 31st Annual Event has in store. Thank you for 30th years of great support!Read More
We’ve received a record breaking $443,836.50 from the 29th Annual Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses! This donation brings the total raised since 1987 to an incredible $5.5 million.
“Without the support of Guns ‘N Hoses, we would not be able to support the 75 families with 64 children who unfortunately have lost loved ones,” said Chief Ron Battelle, Executive Director of The BackStoppers. “This donation will allow us to continue to provide the level of support our families need and to be a safety net for those families who lose a family member in the line of duty.”
“We are proud to continue to support the great work being done by The BackStoppers,” said David Stokes, president of the St. Louis Guns ‘N Hoses Boxing Association. “We hope this donation will make a difference in the lives of those who have lost loved ones in the line of duty.”

Thank you to everyone who’s joined us on Thanksgiving Eve year after year, all the fighters, and everyone whose time and effort makes this possible.
