The BackStoppers is now assisting the family of Officer James “Mitch” Ellis, Jr. of the St. Louis County Police Department who was killed in the line of duty in a vehicle accident on October 11, 2019.

Officer Ellis was 49 years old. He served with the St. Louis County Police Department for eight years.

Officer Ellis leaves behind his wife and five children between 9 and 17 years of age. A hero lost his life while serving and protecting the community. We will honor Officer Ellis’ memory by serving his wife and children now and in the future. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Ellis family, the St. Louis County Police Department, and friends and co-workers of Officer Ellis.

The BackStoppers assists approximately over 80 families with over 65 dependent children and has assisted over 160 families since 1959.

The BackStoppers’ assistance is immediate and ongoing.  Following the death of an officer, his or her family receives a check for $10,000 to be used in whatever way they need.

Within a few weeks, our representatives meet with the surviving spouse to identify the family’s other financial obligations, eliminate the family’s debt, and provide ongoing support for education and other extraordinary expenses.

We recognize the tremendous sacrifices that public servants make every day when they go to work. We understand the burdens placed on surviving spouses and children when tragedies occur. We believe our community has an obligation to care for the loved ones of those who have protected us.
